Fishfinger Bento

To make this I boiled up some mini pasta stars (how cute are they?!) And fried up a couple of fishfingers (fishsticks). I cooked broccoli with the pasta stars and a few slices of courgette (Zucchini) with the fish sticks. While that was cooking, I cut a slice of cheese with the teddy bear cutter, heart cutter, flower cutter and fan cutter. (For shape cutters click here.) I used the teddy bear cutter on the raw carrot and made orange comet shapes by using the hands of the lizard cutter. I cut a slice of bread with the top end of the fork shaped cutter to make some white tulips. Then i arranged it and added faces with Tomato Ketchup and put a blob of it in the corner.

Voila : A Fishfinger Bento fit for a prince (my toddler!) This one was one of the more successful bentos, here he ate most of it!

Breakfast Bento

Breakfast Bento

Good Morning!

It’s a beautiful Sunday Morning and what better way to spend it that preparing a Bento style Breakfast?!

Here it is! —->

I made this by pouring some cornflakes into a bowl, and then put some bread in the toaster. While the toast was cooking, I chopped up a banana and a baby orange. Then I put some of the banana and orange pieces onto mini skewers (food picks) and then poured a little bowl of milk. This would work better with yogurt because the milk splashes about too much really. And then finally I spread peanut butter onto the toast and drizzled caramel syrup on it and then cut out little teddy bear shapes with a small cookie cutter. The eyes, nose and mouth are made from sesame seeds, strategically placed, using a food pick and a bit of peanut butter on the end so it sticks – then you can place the seeds without too much difficulty!

I started by opening a can of vegetable ravioli, and while it was warming up in the microwave I cut an aubergine (eggplant) and scooped out the middle of it, leaving a tube shape. Then I sliced one edge so that I could unroll it to make a flat oblong shape. Then I got my lizard shape cookie cutter and attempted to cut out the shape. Warning, the skin of the aubergine is quite tough so you might have to use a tea towel between your hand and the cutter so you don’t hurt yourself. Or alternatively you can put it on the floor and stamp on it (kidding – just checking you’re awake hehe!)

Ok then I did the same for the star, with a star shaped cookie cutter on the remaining flat bit of aubergine.

Then I put the shapes into a small frying pan with a little bit of oil and salt and because I use induction it gets pretty hot extremely fast, and I was able to very lightly fry the aubergines just on the “belly” side. Then I put a few spoons of ravioli into one side of the bento box, and some half slices of bread in the other side, and placed the lizard and star on top. i put a cheese spiral skewer on finally to decorate.

I served this to my toddler who ate the ravioli and cheese but left the lizard and star for me. I had this weird feeling when eating the lizard. I actually felt like I was eating a real lizard! It was awesome! And quite salty – so pretty authentic as far as lizards go!

And Aubergines (eggplants) are very closely related to the tobacco plant, and contain traces of nicotine. No wonder I am buzzing right now!!!

Try it, and let me know how it goes! I’m on twitter @bentoboxuk, follow me!

Have a great weekend! :o)

Bento Number 5 – Spaceman type Dude

Spaceman Bento
Spaceman Bento

This one is a kind of spaceman type character with a cherry skewer for a sword! His eyes are made of apple pips! He’s lying on a bed of yogurt and his limbs are made out of banana and his hands and feet are orange segments. This was intended for the kids but it got eaten up by my husband!

Bento number 4

Bento with sunflower seeds
Bento with sunflower seeds

I made this bento by using cookie cutters to shape the rice.  I wanted to experiment with food dye on the sunflower seeds to see if this would be a good effect for decorations and to use them as eyes. I cut some vine leaf to make the hair.
